Girls Varsity Volleyball · Varsity Volleyball’s Regular Season Play Nearing the End


ASHEBORO (October 10, 2018) – The Southwestern Randolph varsity volleyball team moves to 17-4 overall and 8-3 in conference play after winning Saturday’s matches against Northern Guilford and Wheatmore while coming up short against Asheboro on Tuesday.

During Saturday’s game, sophomore Peyton LeRoy recorded her 1,000thassist of the season in the second set of the Wheatmore game. According to MaxPreps.com website, that would place LeRoy No. 1 in the state and No. 18 in the nation on the assist leaderboard as on Wednesday morning.

In the first of two games on Saturday, SWR defeated Northern Guilford in four sets. The Cougars took the first set by a score of 25-22 before the Nighthawks would fight back to take the second set 24-26. SWR then rallied to take the next two set to seal the win with scores of 25-12 and 25-21.

Cassidy Schiebel added 11 kills and six service aces to her stats. Ashton Maness recorded 10 kills while LeRoy had 36 assists and 16 digs. Meredith Smith led the team in digs with 17.

SWR defeated Wheatmore in four sets as well with scores of 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, and 26-24. Payton Shiflet had 13 kills and 12 digs during this contest. Schiebel snagged 12 kills and four blocks while LeRoy added 39 more assist and 10 digs to her stats. Meredith Smith led the team with 24 digs.

The Cougars came up short against their cross-town rivals in the Blue Comets. It was a battle that took five sets to decide the winner. It was much like a game of tug-of-war with the outcomes of each set going back and forth.

SWR took the first set 25-19 with Asheboro grabbing the second one by a score of 23-25 which would also be the closest set of the series. The Cougars then rallied back to capture the third set 25-18. The Blue Comets took the four set 18-25 setting up a 15-point tiebreaker set to decide the winner. Asheboro was able to use the momentum from the fourth set to help them secure the fifth set 7-15 and win the match.

Schiebel had 13 kills and two service aces. Shiflet was able to capture 12 kills and 20 digs and Ashton Maness had eight kills and 12 digs with Anna Kate Schiebel grabbing five kills and eight blocks. Smith led the team in digs with 31 and LeRoy led the team with 41 assists and 19 digs.

SWR will face West Forsyth in an Endowment Match today in Clemmons, N.C. and will play their final conference match Thursday against Southeast Guilford in another away match with game time set to begin at 6:15 p.m.
