ASHEBORO (October 17, 2018) – The Southwestern Randolph varsity volleyball team defeated Southeast Guilford in three sets during the last regular season 3A Mid-Piedmont Conference match on Monday, Oct. 15. On Tuesday, SWR defeated Southern Guilford in the opening round of the 3A Mid-Piedmont Conference tournament.
On Monday, SWR matched up against Southeast Guilford in the final regular season match of the season. The Cougars wasted no time in taking the first set 25-18. The Falcons then started to settle down and find their groove on the court, but it was not enough as the Cougars would edge them out in the second set 25-23. SWR then went on the seal the victory taking the third set 25-16.
The Cougars started off hot Tuesday night and used it to their advantage taking the first set 25-12. They used the momentum to continue the charge and defeating Southern Guilford 25-14 in the second set.
Southern Guilford was in a must-win situation heading into the third set if they were to keep their playoff hopes alive. As much as the Storm wanted to win, the Cougars proved to be too much to handle down the stretch winning the third set 25-16.
Payton Shiflet accumulated 14 kills and 17 digs between the two matches. Meredith Smith grabbed 25 digs over the two events while Peyton LeRoy had 27 assists and 12 service aces over the two contests. Molly Strider was able to get four service aces and nine assists. Cassidy Schiebel had seven kills and three blocks and Jenna Davis had five kills.
SWR will now face cross-town rival Asheboro in the Semi-finals tonight at Southern Alamance at 7:00 p.m.
