GRAHAM, N.C. (October 17, 2018) – Southwestern Randolph varsity volleyball team defeated Asheboro to advance to the 3A Mid-Piedmont Conference title match. This win gives the Cougars a 21-4 record on the season.
SWR came out with a purpose Wednesday night as they faced rival Asheboro. The purpose was obvious within the first couple minutes of the match and that purpose was to win. The Cougars had not only lost both games to the Blue Comets in regular season play, but it was also a deja vu moment as they faced Asheboro again after losing to them last season in the tournament and was eliminated.
“Well we knew the first two times that we played them this year we didn’t play the best that we could and had a lot of errors we could have controlled,” said head coach Darby Kennedy. “Asheboro always plays us the best that they can, and it makes for a tough match.”
SWR took the first set 25-19 after coming out and taking an early lead that Asheboro was not able to recover from. In the second set, the Cougars continued their march and took the second set 25-17.
Asheboro was not ready to give up so easily though, as they came out strong in the third set going up quickly on SWR. The Cougars fought back and took the lead late but was unable to hold onto it as the Blue Comets rallied back to take the third set 24-26.
“We battled back in that third set and the girls were able to see what they are capable of,” said Kennedy.
Determined not to let Asheboro back into the match, SWR made a push in the fourth set to seal the win and advance to the 3A Mid Piedmont Conference Championship match with a score of 25-15.
Payton Shiflet led the team with 15 kills and 10 digs. Cassidy Schiebel contributed 12 kills to the Cougars stat sheet while Ashton Maness added 12 kills and 4 blocks. Payton LeRoy had another amazing night with 44 assists and 18 digs.
“I think this win will help the girls get ready for tomorrow and for the state playoffs knowing what we can do,” said Kennedy.
SWR will take on Southern Alamance for the conference title on Thursday, Oct. 18 with game time set to start at 6:00 p.m.
